‘Four Years’ marks a change from the edgy punk
funk of Def Nettle’s previous work into an emo soundscape that discusses femicide and
injustice, specifically the violent murder of Brady’s ex-girlfriend by her male partner.
Producer/vocalist Glen Brady says of the song: “This is an honest and intense ballad of
lost love, death and the injustice of violence against women but it’s also an expression
of angst, frustration and helplessness within modern masculinity. It’s a tale of the
profound impact that the murder of my ex had on me and the personal transformation
that came in the aftermath of that event. While not being overtly political, there’s a
feeling within the song and the album of disenchantment with modern society, the role
of the artist and the commercialization of our lives.”
Musically, the song is heavily influenced by the lyricism and eclectic feel of Brady’s
favorite album as a teenager, The The’s Soul Mining. Emotive wordplay is backed up
by a plethora of analog and digital synths. Acoustic and electric guitars weave a tapestry
that culminates in a soft, yet infectious groove and ‘wall of sound’ approach that is both
soothing and delicately eerie.
